Laying the foundation for a campaign

Joe Picozzi, the Republican candidate in the 5th Senatorial District, recently held an event at Paddy Whacks Irish Sports Pub to meet voters and thank volunteers for helping him get on the ballot.

About 60 people came out for Picozzi, who is challenging Sen. Jimmy Dillon. Both candidates are unopposed in the April 23 primary.

Picozzi, of Somerton, is an Eagle Scout and a graduate of St. Christopher Elementary School and Holy Ghost Prep.

Among those at the March 21 event were Monsignor Joseph Garvin, the longtime pastor at St. Christopher, and the Rev. Sang Woo Chi, a parochial vicar at St. Christopher.

While unopposed in the primary, Picozzi is raising money, introducing himself to voters at their doors, using digital media to boost his name identification and organizing neighborhood cleanups.

The challenger believes he is successfully engaging people not previously involved in politics. ••
